Furniture Care Information

Simple care practices help preserve the beauty, finish, and function of handcrafted solid wood furniture for generations.

Nature’s signature

Natural variation is part of the beauty.

Texture, color, grain density, knots, and swirls vary from board to board. Each piece accepts stain and sealer differently, so an exact match to a sample cannot be guaranteed. These natural characteristics are not defects.

Wood also expands and contracts as temperature and humidity change. Small seasonal movements are natural and do not necessarily affect the strength of the furniture.

The first few weeks

Let the finish cure properly.

Jake’s furniture is protected by multiple hardened layers of catalyzed conversion varnish. The finish is heat- and water-resistant, but it is not heatproof.

  • Allow approximately 21 days for the finish to cure before heavy use.
  • During the curing period, do not place warm items directly on the surface.
  • Avoid prolonged exposure to water, especially while the finish is curing.

Cleaning Solid Wood

Dust can be abrasive, so remove it gently. Jake’s recommends its MiraFiber UltimateCloth: dampen with water, wipe with the grain, and wring it more thoroughly or dry the surface if water beads.

Never use Pledge or silicone-based polishes. Silicone can penetrate the finish and wood pores and may cause damage.

For fine scratches, use Old English Furniture Polish. For stubborn marks, a Magic Eraser or Quick Eraser may help. Remove sticky food with a lightly soapy dish cloth, follow with a water-damp cloth, and dry with a soft towel. A small amount of organic coconut oil may be used to remove grease and restore luster without heavy buildup.

Assembly & Moving

Most furniture arrives assembled. A half-inch wrench or socket may be needed for table pedestals, feet, or legs, and a Phillips screwdriver may be needed for hutches or dresser mirrors.

When disassembling larger pieces for moving or storage, label and securely store the hardware so reassembly is straightforward.

Cherry Wood & Light

Cherry naturally darkens with exposure to light, developing a rich reddish-brown patina. During the first years especially, avoid leaving placemats, books, or decorative items in one position for long periods, as covered areas may age unevenly.

Regular, gentle dusting helps keep the surface even and beautiful.

Outdoor care

Care for furniture through every season.

  • Clean with mild soap and water using a soft brush or cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals and pressure washers; rinse well and allow the furniture to dry completely.
  • Apply a high-quality outdoor sealant or penetrating oil or stain appropriate for the hardwood about once a year.
  • During extreme weather or winter, move furniture indoors when possible or use weather-resistant covers. Keep pieces elevated away from standing water.
  • Inspect and tighten hardware regularly. Contact Jake’s before attempting major refinishing; professional cleaning and re-staining service is available.

Seasonal Storage

Clean and fully dry furniture before storing it. Use soft blankets or breathable covers, choose a climate-controlled area when possible, elevate pieces off the floor, and store cushions separately. Avoid trapping moisture around wood or upholstery.

Protective Covers

Weather-resistant covers help guard outdoor furniture from rain, snow, and ultraviolet exposure. Always clean and dry the furniture first, and maintain the protective finish annually.

Regular Inspections

Check for loose joints, surface damage, worn felt pads, insects, and changes in drawer or door movement. Tighten fasteners, address scratches or dents with an appropriate repair product, lubricate hinges when needed, and monitor indoor humidity.
